Background
In early 2024, the leadership team at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church in Jackson, Mississippi confronted a critical and time-sensitive facilities challenge: their aging HVAC system was failing.
While the need for replacement was obvious, church leaders felt unprepared to take on the complexities of launching a capital campaign, particularly while also managing the day-to-day demands of ministry and growth. “Capital campaigns typically involve a thousand small decisions, and if you’re focused on growing your church, you just don’t have the time or capacity to manage all of them,” said Reverend Bruce Case, Senior Pastor.
Recognizing the potential strain on their focus and capacity, they turned to Cargill Associates. Partnering with Kurt Appel, Group Vice President, a seasoned expert with decades of experience supporting churches through capital campaigns, proved to be a pivotal turning point in their journey.
Vision
St. Luke’s leadership understood that caring for their historic church building wasn’t just about maintaining physical infrastructure, it was about investing in the future of ministry. One of their most persistent issues was the outdated HVAC system, which had become a source of financial and operational strain.
As the team assessed the true scope of the challenge, their thinking began to shift. They realized this project was not just a facilities fix, but a matter of stewardship. The effort became about passing on a thriving, mission-ready church to the next generation, one capable of growing in ministry and serving its community for years to come.
The Plan
After identifying a solution that would cost approximately $500,000, church leaders began looking for guidance on how to move forward. They reached out to Cargill for support, and Kurt Appel stepped in to lead the effort.
From the start, Kurt invested time in understanding the church’s unique story and needs. His approach helped the leadership team shift from feeling overwhelmed to feeling inspired. Rather than focusing solely on challenges, they were encouraged to consider what their congregation was capable of, both financially and spiritually.
“From the moment Kurt arrived, I could tell he was really listening. He took the time to understand our church, our needs, and our story. He helped us dream, plan, and pray,” said Reverend Case.
As a result, the church set a bold goal: raise $800,000 to cover not only the HVAC system, but also other critical improvements like painting and beautification projects. This broader vision deepened the purpose behind the campaign.
Pre-Campaign Planning
Before launching publicly, the St. Luke’s team worked closely with Cargill to lay a solid foundation. Together, they clarified goals, established messaging, and prepared leadership for the road ahead. This intentional planning phase ensured confidence and readiness across the board.
The Campaign
With a goal that surpassed their annual budget, there were natural concerns within the congregation about whether they could truly reach it. Yet with Cargill’s support and Kurt’s guidance, what once felt daunting became manageable.
The campaign was carefully structured into achievable phases, and the process moved forward step by step. Grounded in biblical stewardship and supported by proven strategy, the campaign gained momentum and built trust.
Cargill’s materials, planning tools, and communications support received high praise from members, who appreciated the clarity and professionalism of the campaign. The sense of organization and direction helped maintain confidence throughout, allowing leadership to focus on relationship-building and storytelling.
Outcomes
While the financial goal was met, the campaign delivered lasting benefits that went far beyond dollars raised. The process helped the church reimagine how it builds community, engages members, and cultivates leaders.
“Cargill took what felt impossible and helped us move forward with confidence. The approach was truly a godsend,” said Reverend Case.
The experience introduced stronger stewardship practices and created space for generosity rooted in joy, not obligation. The congregation responded not only with financial gifts, but also with renewed energy and commitment to the mission.
“I had older members come up to me and say, ‘I can’t believe how organized and clear everything has been.’ That clarity made all the difference.”
Through their work with Cargill, St. Luke’s built habits that support both spiritual and operational health, setting them up not just for one successful project, but for long-term growth and impact.
“At its core, what Cargill offers is a way to build better habits. It’s not just about doing the right things, it’s about doing things right.”
Testimonials
“We constantly had engineers in the building, offering estimates that honestly terrified us. We kept thinking, ‘There’s no way we can raise that kind of money. What’s more, the impact didn’t stop with the campaign. We developed ideas around building community, forming small groups, and raising up leadership that we’re continuing to use. These lessons go well beyond fundraising.”
